Beds
How do you make your bed every morning? A thought I mulled over with a cousin at a recent funeral. She had been staying at friends whilst buying a new property and commented that they made their beds, very differently to her and she could not fathom why, because as we always think whatever the situation our way is the best. Making the bed is very particular to each individual and sometimes differs dramatically inside relationships. Take my partner and I for instance, I like the sheets turned over the top of the quilt so I can cover my ear if it gets cold during the night she on the other hand, likes the quilt further down the bed so she can move deeper into the bed and snuggle up throughout the night. This does cause a lot of quilt pulling through the night however after nearly 20 years we seem to have it organised. Then of course there is the tucking in of sheets at the bottom of the bed in my case I don't like them tucked in at all and you guessed it she likes neat hospital corners. Thinking as I write, it is amazing we made it to nearly twenty years. My other dislike is crinkles in the sheets, you know that feeling of rolls of material rippling up and down your body annoying the hell out of you, that's what I detest. Sheets should be smooth and straight to ensure calm sleeping. These little quirks I dare say are very different from others, however, for me a neat bed in a dark room is the only way to sleep. I have been putting more thought into the way I like to sleep of late as I face the prospect of sleeping in many differently made beds later this year, as I travel through the UK for six weeks. I can see myself arriving at each overnight destination and immediately pulling the bed apart getting rid of the hospital corners and tugging the quilt right up to the top!
This led me to look at myself for any other little quirks I may have I would like to say there are no more and the bed thing is just a one off but alas I can not tell a lie. All my life I have deconstructed meals, eating my least favorite food first, leaving the favorite till last for extra enjoyment, this little pleasure often led me to being laughed at by my family as they are all 'normal' eaters, I could say they were boring, with my way being more fun. I was having breakfast with my father-in-law one morning, chomping away on my toast when I looked up to see him staring at me with what I could only say was a look of complete amazement. It took me a few minutes to work out why he almost chuckled out loud. I have a certain way of cutting my toast after I have buttered it all the way to the edge, first off come the crusts from all the slices I'm having, usually two one spread with vegemite and one with jam or golden syrup. Once all crusts have been cut off I eat them one at a time savory then sweet then the best bit I eat the savory then the sweet left over squares. You may think this strange but for me it is the only way to eat toast.
So now I pose another question have you ever watched people eat during a flight? Some eat the chocolate first, some start with the bread, many eat the main meal and others eat the first thing they open. People like myself firstly open the cutlery, pepper and salt, then the courses in order of preference, never changing the pattern. Every time I travel I eat my meal the same way, is this for luck, I think not it is just a peculiar quirk which we all have. Imagine if all we did was undertaken in the same way, what a boring old world it would be!!
