Once again, Christmas has come and gone! We rush, we spend, we eat and then we take a week to clean up the mess and eat the leftover Christmas food.  At last, I draw a calming breath and set the house back onto its usual chaotic course only to lurch into the New Year. The new year starts with oooh and ahh as the fireworks light up the sky , people  drink and  fight, some may even die then those left wake up and say what a great new year I was so drunk don’t even remember what I did! This if FUN how??

The Christmas, New Year food has finally gone; it is time to hit the shops. Low and behold, there are no vestiges of the festive season why because hot cross buns and Easter eggs occupy the shelves. When did Christmas merge into Easter? What happed to the expectation of another long weekend enjoying family, fun and chocolate? I do not know and nobody can tell me!

There used to be a suitable break between the two a bit like a period of morning we would get over Christmas melt through another long hot summer, return to school and look forward to Easter. A long weekend where everything would be closed on Thursday and not reopen until Tuesday or in some cases Wednesday everyone had a break, well at least most everyone, those enterprising deli owners would make a killing because you would inevitably forget to buy enough milk or some other needed commodity to get you through the four or five days. Oh, those were the times when the family breaks meant we were all there no one had to work, we could go away without a care in the world as long as the fridge was full, all was good. For those old enough to remember Easter was in the middle of first term not in the school holidays as it is now does not seem so unique.

I lament the loss of the special family time, I'm lucky I suppose we get together at Ester even this year with the children ranging from 12-19 they will still have an Easter egg hunt, amazing lunch and time together full of laughter reminding us of what and who we have and how easily it can disappear. Life is precious as are those we love.
