Broome
In an earlier post I mentioned being sunburnt in Broome, this is the tale.
After an afternoon shift on the mine, I was collected by my partner and a friend, it was eleven pm and they were pretty well pissed, not sure how they managed to drive up the hill. We set off into the night with a six-hour drive ahead of us for a few days R&R in beautiful Broome. Well, I say us however, the other two were not capable of going the distance, so after working eight hours I drove all the way. As usual when I saw something different on the road or in the night sky there were snide comments from the passengers. Look, I say, at light following us along as I looked out of the side window, what light was the response you are seeing things. Don’t you know about the Min, Min, light says I
“The Min, Min, light is part of many Aboriginal cultures across Australia, and is described as a light that follows travelers for long distances “
I swear there was a light following us sitting just above the horizon off to our right and bobbing along beside us. After much chatter and debate it was decided that there was a light however it must have been a car in the bush. Me I think it was the Min Min light and now forty-four years later no one will dissuade me from what I saw on that night.
We arrived in Broome not long after sunrise, I was completely shattered the other two were ready to party, arriving at Cabel beach I was ready to sleep the day away. Not sure if you know but back in the day you could get your gear off and swim (very carefully) or lay on the sand. I chose a spot not far from the little shade the car was casting and settled in, while they set off to find adventure or at least a drink. I was rudely awoken by two very pissed compadres late in the afternoon, they were all yahoo and full of it, wanting to go out and paint the town red. However, the only thing that was red was me. From the back of my neck to the soles of my feet I was stiff and sore, not to mention grumpy, none of which was recognised by the pissed pair. An issue that occurred many times over the next couple of years. This trip to beautiful Broome cost me two weeks off work and incredible pain.
